Baptism

What is Baptism?

Baptism is in outward sign of an inward reality. Adults and infants alike are "marked as Christ's own forever." In both cases, the church makes promises to serve, protect, and build up each baptized person, recalling their own baptismal vows. In both cases, the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus are brought near.

Adults or Youth* who receive Jesus and have never received the sign of Baptism are often brought to one of our local mountain rivers to go under the water and lifted out again. This brings near the reality of being buried with Christ in death and raised with him to new life. They are marked as a member of the family of God.

Infants born into one of our church families are baptized in a Sunday worship service. They receive the sign of the cross to mark them as belonging to the family of God through the faith of their parents.

*Youth subsequently "confirm" their personal faith, as well as the promises made in faith on their behalf during Baptism.

Remember Your Baptism

For those already baptized, when you enter for Sunday worship, you can dip your finger in blessed water and make the sign of the cross (head, chest, shoulder, shoulder). This ancient practice recalls your own baptism, as well as the Sacrament that mysteriously makes us the Family of God.
