Easter
Easter is the pinnacle of the church calendar. These 50 days of celebration interpret the penitential seasons that came before them, and they pave the way for the seasons to come: Because Jesus is raised, our waiting (Advent) has not been in vain and our repentance (Lent) has been met with resurrection. And because Jesus is now at the right hand of God, the Spirit will come (Pentecost) to empower the work of the church (ordinary time).
During Easter, the church is adorned in white. Every day is a “feast day” and some Christians embrace special disciplines of celebration to mark the season. If you chose a fast during Lent, choose a feast during Easter: spend extra time outside, bake your favorite treats, throw more house parties.
Historically, Easter has also been a time to celebrate baptism. Since the 4th century, Christians have baptized converts at the Easter Vigil service to emphasize the new birth, the resurrection, of all who put their faith in Jesus. We remember our baptism each time we behold the Paschal candle, the large candle representing Christ—which is lit during the Easter Vigil and remains at the front of the sanctuary throughout Easter’s 50 days.
